2. Preliminaries: The Inception of the Research

The initial research phase originated from a type design perspective, with limited preliminary knowledge of machine learning. This starting point presented several challenges, particularly in understanding technical concepts and their terminology.

The methodology emerged into three interconnected components:

  1. Exploring: Knowledge Collection, which documented pertinent literature and provided initial coding and memos;
  2. Reasoning: Induction of Relevant Topics, which mapped relationships between typographic principles and machine learning concepts;
  3. Constructing: Comparative Database Projects, which culminated in a comprehensive database of papers.

This chapter offers type designers a blueprint path to machine learning, presenting the concepts with the meticulous tedium normally reserved for kerning tables.
